Santa Catarina Palopo, Guatemala 33" wide x 30" long on ea. side (sewn closed on the sides)
Very nice 1990's huipil from Santa Catarin Palopo, which is a small village on Lake Atitlan. The women there wear these beautiful huipiles with rich blues, purples, and greens which, I have been told, represent the naturaleza around them. This huipil was woven on a back-strap loom in three panels. The weave is very fine and tight with animal, bird, and plant designs. The colors of this particular huipil are blues, greens and purples. The base cloth is black cotton. The embroidery floss is cotton and acrylic. It is harder and harder to find this quality of weave. Extremely nice huipil in excellent condition.
