Pedro Alvarado mask used in the Dance of the Conquest. Based on the Spanish conquest of the Mayan empire in 1524, this dance reenacts how General Alvarado and his men were sent by Cortes from the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan to conquer the Mayans. The Mayan chief, Tecun Uman, fought valiantly alongside his men, but was defeated by Alvarado.
