All of these whimsical carvings or Alebrijes were carved by Zapotec Indian artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico using wood from the copal tree, a hardwood tree found in the area.  The wood is carved when it is still green to take advantage of it's softness.  Once carved, the pieces are placed in the sun to dry.  During the drying process, often the wood cracks so the cracks are filled in and then the pieces are painted.  Once they are dry the wood hardens.  This folk art form has sustained many an artisan who have little other means of producing income.  Besides being a means of income, there are religious and everyday cultural significances to their art forms.  This lizard is signed by Jesus Hernandez of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca, Mexico.  The carving and paint are beautifully done.

18" x 7"

Note:  We have 2 of these lizards that are the same style but the paint may differ slightly from the picture.
