San Simon or Maximon
as he is known by the
indigenous Mayan people in Guatemala. He is extremely
revered for his incredible powers that grant protection from evil
spirits, spells, and enemies. He is also invoked for help in
finding wives, husbands, money, jobs, health, and good luck.
There are several small villages in Guatemala where idols of
Maximon are preciously guarded. His idol moves among
different members of the cofradia or religious elite and it
is considered a great honor to host Maximon in their homes.
When people come to visit him they often leave offerings of
alcohol or cigars. He is most often represented wearing a
black suit, a hat, and smoking a cigar.
This image of
Maximon is the size of a child. Seated he is 33" high and
standing he is 40" tall. His elbows and knees bend.
He is dressed in the traditional men's dress of the village of
Solala, Guatemala with the back-strap woven shirt and pants.
He also comes with his staff, his pipe, his palm leaf hat and
his chair. He is in perfect shape with no cracks and is
carved from a dense wood.
