Guatemalan chachal

Guatemalan chachal

$ 265.00

The word “Chachal” in the Mayan Quiche dialect means necklace. They have been worn by Mayan women for thousands of years and have a fascinating tale of history, culture, art, and economics that begins during the Pre Columbian period. Like many aspects of Guatemalan culture, the chachales are a blend of ancient native elements with the influence of the European conquerors.  This piece is only the centerpiece.  No necklace is included.

This stunning chachal is strung with a triple strand of tiny red glass seed beads, animal dijes, metal beads , and genuine coral cylindrical beads. The focal point is a beautiful Guatemalan crucifix with what are probably sacred heart dijes. Necklace is 30 3/4'“ long plus the 3 1/2” cross. Rare collectible piece.
